Paintings

Painting is a visual process I employ to create a visual landscape in which the key players are truth and fantasy. Whether recognizable imagery is the focal point or abstract shape and line, all the elements of design contribute in “setting the stage” for the story expressed in paint on wood panel. The first series of paintings featured here are from Therapeutic Precepts: Paintings that Heal.

Healing is a reactive process involving all living matter on earth. At the molecular level, healing is a continuous activity: replacement of old cells, old tissue, bones and even teeth in some species. This of course is the physical aspect of repair, with science, we can record it’s activity and success. Emotional healing on the other hand, is less definite, less scientific, is open to the mystery of the universe. Taking care and restoring balance after an emotional trauma takes every kind of healing therapy familiar to us, and at times, some that are not so familiar. Often dealing with emotional wounds (especially those related to eros, love, etc.) the pain of our experience is privatized and goes unattended. We forget that support and empathetic relief is imbedded in language. Paired with a visual reminder, these powerful statements of healing advice can “alert the troops”, “sound the alarm” and bring us back to sanity.

Legend of the Godseye

Early native and historical cultures, throughout the world, created visual images representing the “eye” of the gods, or godseye. Their visual and oral stories described the function of these images as an all-powerful, all-seeing and all-knowing force. A godseye was often represented as a square within a square. This geometric configuration acted as a prism in which energy from the universe was drawn to and filtered through. Energy was refracted as colors are, saturating it with intense power. The strength of this power was manifested as wisdom, clarity of vision and great healing. Wherever a godseye is hung, the universe will find it.

Prairie Series

The American Prairie is a living environment, greatly disturbed by farming, urban living and the overall invasion of modern human populations. Fragments remain, and on these reservations flora and fauna have struggled to survive. This series is a visual testimony to those survivors.
